The Story
As a star athlete in high school, Greg Horvath dreamed of one day going to college and playing college football. But unable to deal with the effects of a devastating childhood, Greg turned to alcohol to cope. In 1979, Greg was suspended from his high school football team for poor academic performance. Greg dropped out of high school, missed his opportunity, and lost touch with his dreams. By the end of the 1980’s, Greg was drinking alcoholically, ser
iously overweight, and smoking three packs of cigarettes a day.
Then, on January 22, 1990, in a moment of clarity, Greg re-connected with his lost dreams and set out on a journey of self-discovery. He quit drinking and smoking, and over the next several years, he rebuilt himself physically. Greg also established an award-winning career in real estate. With many goals realized and new ones defined, Greg was still unfulfilled. He still felt he had never shed the mistakes of his past, and his broken boyhood dream of going to college and playing college football still haunted him.
So it was with steely determination, after years of training, that Greg pursued his now seemingly impossible dream. Unbelievably, at age 38, Greg was accepted at Saddleback College in California and given an opportunity to try out for the football team.
The story is finally told
Greg chronicled his journey as he wanted a video diary of his experience. Thanks to a chance meeting at the Sundance Film Festival in January of 2008, Greg’s story is now being told. That’s where Greg met the award-winning writer/director Adam Finberg of Jasonite Pictures. Adam was very intrigued by both Greg and his story. After previewing the footage, Adam realized this was not just a football story, but a great life story. It dealt with overcoming adversity, addiction, letting go of the past, forgiveness, and so much more. As Adam put it, “I felt compelled to tell this amazing life story”.
This documentary takes you through Greg’s physical and emotional journey as he takes a leap of faith to pursue his boyhood dream. You learn through emotional interviews about past mistakes, the regrets he has, and the difficulty he had in understanding and forgiving his father so he can be a better father for his own son. It takes us to Saddleback College in California where Greg must work hard to keep up with 19 and 20 year olds who can endure the grind of a long, hot training camp in stride. Far from home, fighting injury and mounting self doubt, Greg pushes on. Ultimately, he proves that achievement is dependent on one’s attitude and the willingness to do whatever it takes, including the ability to forgive and ask for help. Most importantly, he proves that dreams can come true!
Greg was named Most Inspirational Player and was also placed on the President’s Honor List for maintaining a 4.0 GPA.
It is said that greatness, however fleeting, changes a man forever. This experience changed the course of Greg’s life. He now works as a motivational speaker, and in the field of recovery as a renowned sober coach and interventionist. In 2007, he co-created and co-hosted the Let's Talk Recovery Radio Show in Los Angeles. Greg has also been selected by the NCAA and certified for their Health and Safety Speakers Grant Program. Thanks to this extraordinary documentary and his passion to share his experience, Greg Horvath is becoming one of the most sought after and acclaimed speakers in North America.
